kaiserundkoniglich:

General Otto von Emmich with officers following the attack on Liège.

The Battle of Liège was the opening engagement of the German invasion of Belgium, and the first battle of World War I. The invasion of Belgium was the event that triggered the United Kingdom’s entry into the war.

Why Belgium? The Schlieffen plan - because Germany feared a two-front war against both France and Russia, it was suggested that France be defeated early in the war (as had been done during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870) so that the focus could shift eastward entirely to Russia. In order to execute the Schlieffen plan, neutral Belgium had to be overtaken and crossed within a few days.
